Massachusetts car shipping comes with its own set of puzzles: colonial-era streets in Boston, resident-only parking on many blocks in Cambridge and Somerville, and winters that can stall a pickup for a day after a nor'easter. Sahara Auto Transport plans around all of it. Whether you need to ship a car to Massachusetts for a new job along Route 128 or move a vehicle out of Boston for the season, we match you with a carrier that already runs New England lanes and knows where a full-size car hauler can actually stop.
The Bay State is one of the biggest snowbird origins on the East Coast. From October through December, retirees from the South Shore, the North Shore and Worcester County head for Naples, Sarasota, Palm Beach and the Space Coast, and the I-95 lane south fills with car carriers. The return wave runs roughly April into May. If you are shipping on those dates, booking two to three weeks ahead gives the driver time to build a load around your pickup instead of squeezing you in. Many customers fly out of Logan and meet their car in Florida a few days later.
Outside Boston the job looks different. Worcester and Springfield sit right on the Mass Pike with easy truck access, while the Berkshires, the Pioneer Valley hill towns and Cape Cod mean slower runs on two-lane roads or over the Sagamore and Bourne bridges. A July pickup on the Cape can hit heavy bridge traffic, so flexible windows help. Open carriers handle most daily drivers well; enclosed transport makes more sense for a garaged classic from Marblehead or a new EV you want kept away from road salt.
Pickup and delivery
Where we ship in Massachusetts
Boston
Beacon Hill, the North End, Back Bay and the triple-decker blocks of South Boston have narrow one-way streets and permit-only parking, so most Boston pickups move to a wider street or a nearby commercial lot.
Cambridge and Somerville
Dense rental housing and the September 1 lease turnover make late August and early September one of the busiest windows for student and young professional moves.
Worcester
Close to the I-90 and I-290 interchange, Worcester is easy for carriers to reach, though its hilly three-decker neighborhoods sometimes call for a meet point on Route 9.
Springfield
Sitting where I-91 meets the Mass Pike, Springfield suits carriers heading to Hartford, New York or west toward Albany, and pickups in Chicopee, Holyoke and West Springfield are usually simple.
Lowell and the Merrimack Valley
Lowell, Lawrence and Andover sit along I-495 and US-3, giving carriers fast access from the I-93 corridor without fighting downtown Boston traffic.
Cape Cod
Hyannis, Falmouth and Chatham require crossing the Sagamore or Bourne Bridge, and summer weekends can add hours, so weekday pickups go far more smoothly.

Nor'easters, snowbird season and Cape summers
Winter is the wild card. A nor'easter can drop a foot or more of snow on eastern Massachusetts in a day, and cities declare snow emergencies that clear main streets of parked cars. Carriers usually wait out the worst of a storm, then catch up within a day or two. Road salt and brine coat everything from December to March, which is why owners of classics and luxury cars often choose enclosed transport in winter.
Demand follows the snowbird calendar. Southbound volume to Florida peaks from October through December, and northbound volume peaks in April and May. Summer brings a different crowd: Cape Cod and Berkshires homeowners shipping cars in around Memorial Day and out after Labor Day, plus a wave of student moves around September 1. Florida-bound shipments in early fall also overlap the tail of hurricane season, which runs June through November.
Local know-how
Tips for shipping a car in Massachusetts
- Car carriers, like all commercial vehicles, are banned from Storrow Drive and Memorial Drive, so pick a meet point that does not depend on either parkway.
- New residents register through the Massachusetts RMV, and a Massachusetts insurance agent typically has to complete part of the registration application. Most states expect registration within about 30 days of residency, and Massachusetts also requires a state inspection soon after registering, so check the RMV for current rules.
- If your car has an E-ZPass transponder, remove it or seal it in its shielding bag before pickup so it is not charged as the truck rolls under Mass Pike gantries and tolls in other states.
- When a snow emergency is forecast, keep the car in a driveway or garage rather than on a posted street, and confirm the pickup spot with the driver the night before.
- Avoid booking right around September 1 in Boston, Cambridge and Allston if you can; moving trucks clog residential streets as thousands of leases turn over at once.
