South Dakota car shipping is mostly a story of two interstates and long distances between towns. I-29 runs north and south along the eastern edge through Sioux Falls, Brookings and Watertown, while I-90 crosses the entire state for roughly 410 miles from the Minnesota line to the Wyoming border. Most carriers already travel those two roads, so pickups near them tend to schedule faster. Ranch addresses west of the Missouri River take extra coordination, and that is where an experienced dispatcher makes a real difference.
The state also sees a less common kind of customer: full-time RVers and travelers who use South Dakota as their legal home. Many register vehicles here through Sioux Falls mail services while living on the road, then need a car moved to wherever they are parked for the season. Add college moves to Brookings and Vermillion, military assignments at Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, and retirees heading south each fall, and the lanes stay busy year round.
Sahara Auto Transport arranges open and enclosed carriers to and from every corner of the state. We look at your exact address, the time of year and the roads in between, then give you an honest window instead of a promise the weather might break. If your pickup is in a small town off a two-lane highway, we may suggest meeting the truck at a fuel stop or lot near the interstate, which often saves days of waiting.
Pickup and delivery
Where we ship in South Dakota
Sioux Falls
The largest metro and the main truck crossroads where I-29 meets I-90, with easy access from newer subdivisions on the south and west sides.
Rapid City
Gateway to the Black Hills and neighbor to Ellsworth AFB, so military moves and seasonal tourism vehicles make up a good share of demand.
Aberdeen
Sits well off the interstates on US-12 and US-281, so carriers often combine Aberdeen pickups with other northeastern South Dakota loads.
Brookings
Home to South Dakota State University right on I-29, with move-in and move-out spikes in August and May.
Watertown
An I-29 city in the glacial lakes region, where lake cabins and farm properties may need a meeting spot that fits a full-size truck.
Pierre
The capital sits on the Missouri River about 35 miles north of I-90 via US-83, so shipments here are planned as a short detour off the main corridor.
Routes our carriers use

US-83
A long north to south route through Pierre, used for central South Dakota pickups and runs toward Nebraska and Kansas.

Cuts across the northern tier through Watertown and Faith toward Belle Fourche and Montana, used for ranch country deliveries.

Blizzards, ground blizzards and Sturgis week
Winter is the biggest scheduling factor. Snow does not have to be falling for roads to close: strong prairie winds pick up loose snow and create ground blizzards that drop visibility to near zero. The South Dakota DOT closes sections of I-90 and I-29 when conditions turn dangerous, and carriers simply wait it out. From about November through March we build an extra day or two into most quotes and keep you updated if a closure stops the truck.
Summer brings different traffic. During the first half of August, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally draws huge crowds to Sturgis, Rapid City and the Black Hills, and I-90 through the western part of the state gets congested. Fall is pheasant season in the east, and the spring thaw can soften gravel roads. If you are shipping to the Black Hills in August, book early and expect some flexibility on delivery hours.
Local know-how
Tips for shipping a car in South Dakota
- If you register vehicles through a South Dakota mail-forwarding address as a full-time traveler, the car does not have to come to the state. We can ship it straight to wherever you are.
- Gravel and section-line roads are common outside the cities. A full-size carrier usually needs pavement, so pick a town lot or truck stop near I-90 or I-29 for the handoff.
- Most states expect registration within about 30 days of becoming a resident. Check the South Dakota Department of Revenue motor vehicle office for current rules and any county-level steps.
- Check SD511 before your pickup or delivery date in winter so you know whether the interstate is closed between your town and the truck.
- Moving to Rapid City in August? If your dates are flexible, avoid scheduling delivery during the Sturgis rally.
